Exercise 4: Bad Examples of Design
The label featured above is an example of poor design. There is way too much information being overloaded on the reader meaning that they wont end up taking any of it in. There is too much noise going on, the text is layed out poorly and the tag over all is not asthetically pleasing.
The yellow pages is a perfect example of poor design. Unappealing bold black text with tiny advertisements featured next to eachother, unable to stand out from the one next to it. The hierarchy of information in most of the advertisments found in the yellow pages is quite often layed out wrong. Makes it very hard to read and find what your looking for. Infact the only good feature is that it's set out in alphabetical order.
This logo designed by London to enter the campaign to win the hosting of the 2012 Olympics made the rounds on many design forums because of its poor combination of shapes and colours. It only features 3 colours in it's palette, which sometimes can work effectively however this situation it does not. The shapes that are trying to portray the numbers 2012 are poorly executed leaving the viewer wondering what it is actually trying to portray.
Exercise 4: Good examples of design - Retouching
Electric art is a design company on the radar because of the detail that goes into their designs. After working with a broad range of clients from Smirnoff to Channel 7 they have built a credible reputation because of the quality of work they produce. The advertisement for Smirnoff featured above is an example of good design produced by Electric Art because the image itself says more than what a nuch of words could. It creates a tone for the product by making it look refreshing and informs the reader that it is a combination of ginger beer and vodka, a new drink out on the market.

Exercise 4: Good Examples of design - Advertising
In the advertising world humour will get you every where. It is an attribute that many successful advertising campaigns have had.
The "Speeding. No one thinks big of you" campaign is one of the most well known speeding campaigns in Australia over the past ten years. It effectively utilises humour in order to reach its target audience.
Exercise 3a/b: Good Design
Design is a means of communication. If the design poorly communicates with its target audience then it is poor design.
Good design fulfills a purpose, communicates an idea or message effectively in an interesting way. It provokes thought and discussion from the target audiences.
Good design can lead to change and improvement. Poor design can lead to confusion and an unsuccessful transference of a message.
In summary good design is an effective means of communication, problem solving and the presentation of a solution.
Poor design is a message that doesn't reach it's audiences in an interesting and successful way.
Good design:
-Innovative
-Provokes thought and discussion
-Communicates an idea effectively
-Fulfills a purpose
-Problem Solving
-Inspirational/creates meaning
Bad Design:
-Confusing
-Unsuccessful transference of a message
-Unengaged
-Uninspiring

Exercise 1 - Self Audit
Consider the following questions:
What have you enjoyed? Participating in completing a project as a team, particularly in publications when we designed a magazine.
What have you found most intellectually stimulating?
All aspects of photography and publications.
What have you excelled at?
Photography.
What has provided you with the most lasting satisfaction?
Photo Fashion required me to design my own concepts, style and organise my own shoots and then work them into a fashion spread. I very much enjoy seeing my concept turn into a finish product.
What do you think your particular skills are? Try and think beyond technical skills?
I am easy to get along with, this will serve me well in the field of photography.
Where would you like to be next year? In 10 years time?
Next year I would like to be living in Europe, I have no for sight for ten years from now.
What do you secretly fantasise about, career-wise?
Working in New York as a fashion photographer.
If you won lotto what would you do with yourself for the next 20 years?
Travel to every country.
What about you?:
What seems exciting - what rings your bell - even if you know very little about it?
What do you find difficult?
The feeling that my skills are not up to par for some of the programs.
What makes you anxious?
Suspense
Some other questions:
What is design?
It is many things to different people, to sum it up in a sentence; it transforms the ordinary into something extraordinary.
What is its point?
Effectively communication.
What’s the point of being a designer? What’s good about it? What sucks?
It is an interesting and challenge job. Completing a project and being happy with it is the most satisfying feeling, however getting stuck with ideas and running out of time sucks.
Where is design going? What new ways will it develop over the next 5-10 years?
Design is headed even further into the digital world over the next ten years.
Which designers do you admire/idolise? Why? Is it the work they produce, their design- process, or something else?
Georges Antoni is a great photographer with a great attitude.
